This hand-illustrated manual for children educates them about responsible waste disposal and its impact on the environment. It introduces the concept of waste and its types, emphasizing the need for proper waste management. The manual encourages children to adopt eco-friendly habits like reducing, reusing, and recycling. By promoting a sense of responsibility and empowerment, the manual instills lifelong habits of sustainability. Overall, it equips children with the tools to become environmentally conscious individuals who actively contribute to a cleaner and healthier planet.

Introduction

Waste management is a huge issue as a by product of the waste that we generate. The world generated 2.01 billion tons of municipal solid waste in 2016, with this figure anticipated to rise to 3.4 billion tons by 2050. This waste must be controlled in some way, which can be expensive and challenging. One of the most challenging aspects of waste management is that it is a behavioural issue. When it comes to waste, people often overlook to consider the implications of their actions. People may, for example, throw away edible food or fail to recycle goods that could be reused. These actions add to the waste management issue. There are several approaches that can be taken to handle the waste management issue. The approach that I chose is education on the importance of waste management and basic behavioural changes given children are impressionable and they are the future, hence their need to know how their actions can impact the environment is of the utmost importance.

Where it all started ?

It all started with the my visit to Dhapa, a landfill in Kolkata where all the waste of the city get’s dumped. It is so toxic that it is almost always on fire.

When I came to Bangalore, I witnessed certain issues pertaining to waste management. Within the area of New Town Yelahanka, I saw multiple spots where waste is dumped and not taken care of thereafter. Which is why I chose to take up Waste Management as a topic to find the depth of the issue.
